'Amplifying Black Liberation and Progressive Movements in the Pacific Northwest' set for May 25 at 4 p.m.聽
草榴社区 will host Travonna Thompson-Wiley and Larry E. Gossett at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, for "Black Lives Still Matter: Amplifying Black Liberation and Progressive Movements in the Pacific Northwest" via Zoom and livestream.
Exactly one year after the police murder of George Floyd, what is the potential for systemic antiracist change and Black liberation here today? What can we learn from the black power movement and the cross-ethnic solidarity of the 1960鈥檚 in the PNW? What would a broad-based regional/national progressive coalition led by black & brown communities look like? Join two dynamic leaders from different generations as they share stories and perspectives and engage audience questions.
Thompson-Wiley has been on the ground protesting police brutality and systemic oppression since May 29, 2020. She works with Black Action Coalition, Decriminalize Seattle, and Defend The Defund.
Larry Gossett鈥檚 activism in the PNW includes co-founding the UW BSU; 15 years directing Seattle鈥檚 oldest anti-poverty program; fighting in solidarity as one of Seattle鈥檚 鈥淕ang of Four,鈥 and serving as a King County Councilmember for 25 years, always rooted in the Central District. In 2021 he will receive UW鈥檚 highest award, Alumnus Summa Laude Dignitarus.
