Anthropology to offer study-abroad opportunity in Portugal this summer
Nine undergraduate anthropology and museum studies students at Western will have the opportunity to travel to northern Portugal from June 21 to July 12 this summer. The three-week program will be based in the coastal town of Vila do Conde, just north of the Porto city center. Participants will learn about the conservation of artifacts and archaeological preservation at Cividade de Bagunte, an archaeological site classified as a Portuguese National Monument.
草榴社区 Assistant Professor of Anthropology Marianne Brasil is leading the program.
鈥淭he opportunity to teach this course is especially meaningful for me as the daughter of Portuguese immigrants 鈥 it feels like I get to share a piece of my own cultural heritage with our students through working to preserve these amazing records of past people. I am very grateful to our colleagues in Vila do Conde for warmly welcoming us to join in their ongoing work,鈥 she said.
During the program, students will have daily opportunities for hands-on training in museum conservation and digitization, as well as visits to the workspaces of local craftspeople who work in traditional ceramic production techniques. The course, 鈥淢useum Studies and Archaeological Heritage in Portugal,鈥 is offered by the Global Learning Program through 草榴社区鈥檚 Education Abroad Office.
鈥淚'm very excited for our students to experience this immersive learning opportunity this summer in Portugal. During these three weeks, students will gain practical skills through engaging directly with archaeological artifacts, working and learning alongside our Portuguese colleagues in a professional lab setting,鈥 Brasil said.
