Aspiring journalists to camp at Western once again
A hundred and fifty high school students and their journalism advisers are expected to be at Western Washington University for the third year in a row from July 31 to Aug. 3 to take part in the Washington Journalism Education Association’s 2015 summer workshop.
The members of WJEA will be teaching various forms of journalism, including the publishing of newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, television, radio broadcasting and publishing on the Internet.
The following classes will be taught:
- Graphic Design
- Digital News Media
- InDesign
- Editorial Leadership
- Journalism Boot Camp
- Photojournalism
- Journalistic Story Telling
This year students and staff will be staying in the Ridgeway Highland, the Omega and the Sigma residence halls.
"Most of these kids come into this camp knowing very little or nothing at all about journalism, and they leave with so much knowledge," said summer student workshop chair Kirsten Vesely, a teacher at Inglemoor High School. "They can't wait to start their publications in the fall, applying all that they learned at camp. It gets kids excited."
Vesely also said that she loves watching these eager young journalists learn from one another and share their ideas and their enthusiasm.
"I love that these kids think it's cool to be smart," she said.
