AUAP looking for students to serve as International Peer Advisors
The Asia University America Program at Western Washington University is recruiting International Peer Advisors for the 2010-2011 academic year. IPAs are trained to advise AUAP students (from Asia University in Tokyo, Japan) as they acclimate to life in the residence halls and the 草榴社区/Bellingham community. IPAs reside on campus and work for 19hours per week.
Working as an IPA is a great opportunity for Western students to develop their intercultural competence, leadership ability and professionalism. As part of their training, all IPAs take SAA 340: Paraprofessional Advising in an Intercultural Context. The course covers many topics, including student development theory, cultural adjustment, teamwork, problem solving, program planning and facilitating meetings.
A current IPA, Laura Kirk, has this to say about her experience so far:
"I have learned so much about what American culture is, and how to see it from an outside point of view. I have also learned about the Japanese culture, and how the two interact. I have learned to step up more as a leader and just do what needs to be done without waiting for someone else to do it. The students make it fun to be a leader; they really look up to us . . . I have grown by learning to be more respectful and conscious of others around me."
The IPA position is currently posted on the student employment job board with a link to the online application. Applications are due by Feb. 1.
