Carver Academic Renovation achieves LEED Gold certification

The Carver Academic Renovation and Addition project, finished in August of 2017, has completed the review process for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification through the US Green Building Council and has achieved Gold status.

Sustainable features include LED lighting throughout the facility, a green roof at the second level, motion sensor lighting control, recycling and reuse of materials, energy use optimization, use of green power, low flow water fixtures, variable speed motors, low VOC materials, and reuse of an existing facility.

Water efficient landscaping and irrigation systems have reduced irrigation water usage more than 53%, while potable water use has been reduced by 27%. The gold certification also reflects a comprehensive alternative transportation plan, including bicycle storage, shower facilities for commuters, and easy access to public transportation. The building and site designs maximize open space and emphasize comfortable and healthy interior spaces for building occupants.

The project included 80,918 square feet of renovation, 25,019 square feet of replacement, and 57,885 square feet of new addition for a total building area of 163,822 square feet. The renovation provides classrooms, computer labs, movement labs, instructional space, offices, support facilities and gymnasiums for Health and Human Development, Campus Recreation, and Athletics, along with additional general university classrooms.
