Dana Jack (Fairhaven) has article published in 'Community Mental Health Journal'
Dana Jack (Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies) had her article "" published in the Oct. 27, 2009, issue of "Community Mental Health Journal." Jack co-wrote the article with Therese M. Grant and Cara C. Ernst, both from the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington, and Annette L. Fitzpatrick, from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Depression among women commonly co-occurs with substance abuse. In the article, Jack and the other authors explore the association between women鈥檚 depressive symptoms and self-silencing accounting for the effects of known childhood and adult risk indicators. The full model indicated a 3-percent increased risk for depressive distress for each point increase in self-silencing score (OR = 1.03; P = .001). Differences in depressive symptomatology by ethnic groups were accounted for by their differences in self-silencing. The study used the "Silencing the Self Scale," which Jack published. Jack's theory of self-silencing guided the study and analysis.
