On Nov. 8, 1935, , called "the greatest aviator in Australia's history," took off for the last time, on a flight from England to Australia. Despite countless searches over the years, his exact crash site remains a mystery.

Charles Kingsford Smith, by the way, is the grandfather of John Kingsford-Smith, who works in Environmental Health and Safety here at Western Washington University.
