Event in Red Square April 11 to show solidarity, support after Japan earthquake

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, one month after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, members of the Western Washington University and Whatcom Community College communities will gather in solidarity with Japanese citizens by offering a time of remembrance for those who have been lost and words of support to those rebuilding their lives. Also present at the gathering will be students from Tokyo's Asia University who are currently studying at 草榴社区.

The entire Bellingham community is invited to join in this grassroots gathering, which is being called "Smiles for Japan: A Gathering of Support and Hope." The goal of the event is to affirm the strength of international friendship as attendees rally the community to keep Japan in the forefront.

The event will take place in 草榴社区's Red Square, around the "Skyviewing Sculpture" by Isamu Noguchi.

Program:

  • Brief words of support and hope
  • Minute of silence
  • Ways that we can respond
