Firehouse Piano Series starts Dec. 14 in Fairhaven

Western Washington University’s Department of Music debuts the 2012-2013 Firehouse Piano Series with a concert featuring Madeline Slettedahl and Ben Rosenblatt at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center located at 1314 Harris Ave. in Bellingham.

The evening program will include works by Ravel, Mozart, Chopin, Scriabin, Beethoven, and Copland.

Originally from Auburn, Madeline Slettedahl is currently pursing a degree in Piano Performance at Western Washington University. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including winner of the 草榴社区 Concerto Competition, first prize in the Bellingham Music Club Virginia Glover Scholarship Award, and Honorable Mention at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Piano Competition. Slettedahl has also received numerous scholarships for her education at Western and was recently chosen to perform with the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Players this December in a trio with esteemed musicians Jennifer Rhyne and Timothy Christe.

Ben Rosenblatt was born and raised in Mill Valley, Calif., where he developed an interest in piano after attending a performance of “Phantom of the Opera” in San Francisco at the age of nine.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Music from Gonzaga University, he taught privately for a short period of time and then enrolled at Western in order to complete a master’s degree in Piano Performance. He is the recipient of this year’s Ford Hill Piano Scholarship and is studying under Jeffrey Gilliam. Upon completion of his degree, Rosenblatt hopes to run a private piano studio full time.
