Flags to be at half-staff on Patriot Day, Sept. 11

Flags will be at half-staff on Sunday, Sept. 11, in observance of Patriot Day.

Patriot Day was designated in memory of the 2,977 killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71, requesting that the president designate Sept. 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," was approved by a vote of 407–0 on Oct. 25, 2001. President George W. Bush on Dec. 18 that same year.

On this day, the president directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The president also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
