Free or low-cost health coverage available for some families

Some employees may qualify for state assistance in paying their health insurance premiums, particularly for large families at the lower end of the pay spectrum.

Employees may be able to qualify for this assistance in two ways:

  • If your family income is under or close to 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level ($54,930 for a family of three), your children may qualify for enrollment in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This is a special coverage for children under Title XXI of the Social Security Act who do not have other health insurance coverage.
  • The premium-payment program benefits families where one or more of the family is enrolled in Medicaid because the family cannot afford the additional premium cost of insuring all of its dependents through an employer plan. In these cases, Medicaid evaluates the cost to the state to see if the state would save money in the long run by helping the family sign up for the employer plan. In those cases where the state would benefit by simply paying its premiums and turning over coverage to the employer plan, it reimburses the family for that cost. Again, this calculation only is possible when it saves the state money.

If you or your dependents are not enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP but you think you may qualify for this kind of assistance, please contact the Community Services Office in your community to see if you are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP. .

If you or your dependents become eligible for Medicaid, you may qualify for help with your health insurance premium. You may call 1-877- 543-7669 or visit the to get more information about this program. The site includes an application form.
