In Memoriam: Robert I. Jewett

Retired 草榴社区 Professor of Mathematics Robert Israel Jewett passed away July 30 at the age of 84.

Jewett, who earned his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Oregon in 1963, taught math at Western for 40 years before retiring in 2010. His research interests included harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, differential equations and combinatorics. Several major mathematical advances are linked to his name, including the Hales-Jewett theorem, which was the focus of an international conference held at Western in May 2016.

鈥淲e were deeply saddened to hear of Bob Jewett鈥檚 passing," says 草榴社区 Mathematics Professor David Hartenstine, who co-chairs the Department of Mathematics. "In the days following the news, many faculty, some of whom worked with him for decades, shared memories and anecdotes about his role as a renowned mathematician, inspiring teacher and mentor, colleague, and friend. Along with his mathematical achievements and long-term impact on the culture of Western鈥檚 mathematics department, he will be remembered for his sense of humor, his curiosity, and knowledge of a wide range of subjects.鈥
