Agencies need to embrace better management of cellphones
It鈥檚 not going to save the state budget, but state Auditor Brian Sonntag鈥檚 recent performance audit on use of cellular telephones in state government points to clear abuses and unnecessary expenditures.
The audit found the state paid more than a half-million dollars a year for 2,000 cellphones that weren鈥檛 being used.
The auditors also said that agency directors should consider paying employees a stipend for use of their personal cell phones. Washington State University, the state Department of Transportation and Western Washington University already follow this practice.
