All Russian ground forces have left the Kyiv area, U.S. military says
A senior U.S. defense official says all Russian forces that were in the area around the capital of Kyiv since the early days of the war have now left Ukraine. The Russian forces have been pulling back from the region around the capital for the past week, and the U.S. military now assesses that all are gone.
鈥淲e are assessing that all the Russians have left鈥 the Kyiv area, the official said. 鈥淭here are no ground elements around Kyiv. The ground threat is gone for the moment.鈥
The Ukrainian forces are moving into the areas vacated by the Russians and are clearing mines that the Russians left behind, the official says. Also, Russia could still strike Kyiv from the air, though no such attacks have been reported in the past day.
The Russian units are now being resupplied in neighboring Belarus, to the north of Ukraine, according to the official. The U.S. believes the forces will likely be sent back into Ukraine, probably in the eastern part of the country, where Russia is now focused.
