The Bellingham Public Schools system recently , by removing the word 鈥渃itizen鈥 and replacing it with 鈥渋ndividual.鈥 No longer do the public schools aspire to foster 鈥渉onest and ethical citizens who act with integrity鈥 because, in the , 鈥淲e heard concerns from our community that the word 鈥榗itizens鈥 could be misinterpreted, and that some may think we are excluding students and members of our community who are not U.S. citizens.鈥 From my perspective, however, removing the word 鈥渃itizen鈥 is an abdication of the public school system鈥檚 responsibility to the people of Washington and the United States: to prepare young people to be part of our democracy.
