Mariah Reese, Executive Director of the Lelooska Foundation, and niece of Chief Lelooska, reports that there has been a rebirth of culture along the West Coast. Pacific tribes have recovered many ceremonial masks over the last few decades, and work has begun on recreating ceremonial houses. She’s excited to see a renewed interest in preserving culture, because she understands how distinct and varied each tribe’s customs are. “What visitors experience here is one family’s image on one spot on the coast. Every potlatch is unique. What you’d witness with our family is very different than somewhere just a few miles away.”
