Downhill skateboarding: thrills and spills

Cameron Owen zipped up his white leather body suit, pulled his full-face helmet over his shaggy blond locks and dropped his longboard to the ground, ready for his run. Just a practice run down the steep, serpentine stretch of Stemilt Loop Road. The competitive heats of four advancing toward an ultimate winner of the second annual Amigos Outlaw Fiesta downhill skate would come a little later.

Known on the skateboard circuit as Crazy Legs, Owen pushes off fast, gets into a head-forward, hands-back wind resistant crouch down the hill, then leans low into the first in a series of tight turns. Gravel flies as he puts a gloved hand down as an outrigger and twists through the turn as if on tracks, pulls up from the low crouch and leans the other way into the next turn. He鈥檒l be going close to 55 mph by the time he reaches the straightaway end of the course.
