While many teenagers enjoyed their summers cooling off at beaches, one Mariner High School student spent this past summer swimming alongside the creatures that live in those beaches.

Brijonnay Madrigal, a senior at Mariner was selected for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean for Life ocean research program this summer.

In July, Brijonnay went on a trip to the University of Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, Calif. She spent eight days at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara to conduct field research on sea life.
