Abby Quarterman and Doug Evans, both 26, were sound asleep early Thursday when they heard banging at the door.

The couple had moved from Bellingham, Wash., two days ago into a second-floor apartment on Northeast Monroe Street. They are both graduates of Western Washington University. Quarterman is in graduate school at Pacific University to study occupational therapy; Evans is looking for work.

Quarterman immediately knew something was wrong.
