Montana Avalanche Center Director Studies Avalanche Risk
On the lift at Whitefish, Colorado native Zach Guy recalled a less-than-auspicious start to his forecasting career. In the early 2000s, during his undergraduate days at Western Washington University, he and a friend headed up to Mount Baker Ski Area.
鈥淭hey have terrain similar to here,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou take a chairlift up and then you can traverse out into the backcountry.鈥 Neither he nor his friend had any backcountry skills, but they decided to leave the resort 鈥渂ecause the powder looked good.鈥
As they were ducking under the ropes marking the ski area boundary, 鈥渁 ski patroller snagged me by the jacket and was like,鈥橶here are you going?鈥濃
鈥淥h, it looks good over there,鈥 he remembers saying.
鈥淎nd he was like, 鈥榊ou guys don鈥檛 have any avalanche gear, clearly. Do you know what you鈥檙e doing?鈥 And we were like, 鈥楴o,鈥 and they took me down and gave us a little 10-minute avalanche awareness talk.鈥
