Sailing in Marin: Never-quit sailor happy to give back at Leukemia Cup Regatta
SURVIVING leukemia and a capsized sailboat at night outside the Golden Gate Bridge have given Dave Wilhite the green light not to take each day too seriously. After two near death experiences, Wilhite is grateful to be alive and well enough to race in Sunday's Leukemia Cup Regatta at Belvedere's San Francisco Yacht Club.
Wilhite, a sales representative for Doyle Sails, was diagnosed six years ago with hairy-cell leukemia. While fortunate that he had a reasonably controllable form of the disease, the fact that the leukemia he contracted may have been the result of his exposure to petroleum distillates working around boats and boatyards his whole life was a big wake-up call.
