Samish Way鈥檚 urban village transformation is underway with these projects

The transition to an urban village is coming along at a steady clip on Samish Way, with three major projects expected to add hundreds of residential units in the coming year.

In November 2009 the Bellingham City Council approved a plan to create an urban village designation for that stretch of Samish Way that is west of Interstate 5 into the Sehome and York neighborhoods. The plan was updated in 2019 and that鈥檚 led to a flurry of activity. One goal of the urban village concept was to add residential space, and recent projects appear to be delivering in that regard. The three big projects currently under construction will bring in nearly 400 more residential units to that stretch of Samish Way between the Sehome Haggen store and the bend at Ellis Street.
