Students ready to take off with new careers in aerospace manufacturing

As a child, Greg Lane spent much of his time building model airplanes. His favorite was the Hobby Master Thunderbolt II, a military aircraft.

After his time with the Air Force ended in 1982, Lane wanted to continue working with planes, but ultimately ended up at whatever job paid the bills.

Three decades later, Lane, 50, is spending his mornings in the machinist room at the Yakima Valley Technical Skills Center, learning and perfecting skills to do what he enjoyed as a child -- building planes.

Lane is one of 12 students in an inaugural aerospace manufacturing assembly program, which offers training to displaced workers, low-income residents and veterans for jobs in the high-demand industry.

The four-month program, which started in January, includes an online course in aerospace manufacturing and on-site technical training.
