The Home of Color and of Light: Remembering the Local Literary Legacy of Ella Higginson

For locals invested in Bellingham鈥檚 culture, the name 鈥淓lla Higginson鈥 is generally familiar. Literary enthusiasts may know her as Washington鈥檚 first Poet Laureate. Western Washington University visitors may know that the fa莽ade of Edens Hall quotes her (鈥淗ere is the Home of Color and of Light鈥). However, significantly fewer people recognize Ella Higginson鈥檚 untold influence on Bellingham and Pacific Northwest literature.

Higginson was born 1862 in Kansas and grew up in Oregon. In 1888, Higginson and her husband, Russell, moved to New Whatcom, where they remained and built a locally famous house. Higginson鈥檚 more than 800 works鈥攑oems, fiction, and essays鈥攊nspired nationwide fascination with our region.

鈥淓lla Higginson put the Pacific Northwest on the literary map,鈥 says Dr. Laura Laffrado, an English professor at Western Washington University. 鈥淪he created the Pacific Northwest in the minds of people who would never be here.鈥
