Who is your hero?
Probably my hero is my also inspiration — it’s my junior high band director. His name was Elvin Haley and he was like a veteran teacher when I was in seventh grade; he retired after that year. He had us working really well together, but he also looked like he had so much fun with us because he was so happy in dealing with us and happy in his job.
When was your proudest moment?
You know, I’d probably say that it was when I took the band to San Francisco and we performed at Ghirardelli Square, and just the crowd response and the kids’ response and just how much of a pinnacle that was. It was just great, it was just a feel good time. And I felt like at the time that the band as I had it was at the top of its game, just given the amount of time I’d put into it and stuff.
