Washington budget leaders must stay focused on budget fixes

THIS page has urged the Legislature to get moving on the budget problem. Gov. Chris Gregoire's director of finance, Marty Brown, said the same in an email to legislators last week.

The replies came back: We are moving! Be patient!

Patience is difficult after three years of watching the Legislature fall short. Still, we are encouraged when SenateWays and Means Chairman Ed Murray, D-Seattle, agrees that government needs to be reset and says, " I think we will have a budget out earlier than at any time in the history of the state."

We hear from the Republicans that there may be an agreement on $400 million in cuts before Christmas. Good.
