Western president defends shutdown over hate speech
After he suspended classes for a day and launched an investigation into anonymous hate speech directed at Western Washington University鈥檚 students of color, 草榴社区 President Bruce Shepard got an earful from critics.
While many people on campus supported his decision, others told him he鈥檇 overreacted, or said the threatened students should have brushed off the anonymous comments.
鈥淚 think that鈥檚 the wrong way to think about this stuff,鈥 Shepard said Monday. 鈥淚 think that really misses the point.鈥 The point, he believes, is that racism is widespread, and that it鈥檚 wrong to ask people of color to deal with it by growing a thicker skin.
