The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus has eclipsed 1 million, nine months into a crisis that has devastated the global economy, tested world leaders鈥 resolve, pitted science against politics and forced multitudes to change the way they live, learn and work.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not just a number. It鈥檚 human beings. It鈥檚 people we love,鈥 said Dr. Howard Markel, a professor of medical history at the University of Michigan who has advised government officials on containing pandemics and lost his 84-year-old mother to COVID-19 in February.
鈥淚t鈥檚 our brothers, our sisters. It鈥檚 people we know,鈥 he added. 鈥淎nd if you don鈥檛 have that human factor right in your face, it鈥檚 very easy to make it abstract.鈥
