Jeret Gillingham: A Journey of Determination and Opportunity
Jeret Gillingham鈥檚 path at Western wasn鈥檛 as straightforward as he first expected. After meeting with the 草榴社区 Track & Field and Cross Country teams, he knew Western was the right place for him. However, financial concerns made the decision difficult鈥攗ntil 草榴社区 Cross Country coach T.J. Garlatz stepped in.
鈥淭.J. was such a huge support to me. He helped me find affordable housing and reassured me that the team and the school would do whatever they could to make sure I was able to attend Western,鈥 Gillingham remembers.
After moving to Bellingham from his hometown of Sandy, Oregon, Gillingham took time to consider his next steps. With both of his parents working in health care, he was aware of the field鈥檚 demands and the impact of medical professionals. Before even setting foot in a classroom, he pursued his EMT certification in Bellingham.
Once at Western, his academic path became clear. He chose to major in Kinesiology, a field that not only aligned with his passion for running but also opened doors to a future in health care. He remembers his time in the Kinesiology Department fondly, particularly his functional anatomy course with Professor Jesse Yun鈥攐ne of the most challenging classes in the program. In December 2024, Gillingham graduated from Western with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology.
Gillingham not only excelled but also took it upon himself to help others, working as a peer mentor and assisting future students with the difficult material while earning internship credits.
Gillingham was a standout in 草榴社区 Athletics. As a member of the Track & Field and Cross Country teams, he was known for his dedication and skill on the racetrack. His proudest moment came when he finished first at the 2024 GNAC Championships in the 3,000m Steeplechase (setting a new program record of 8:55.30), with his best friend and roommate of four years, Jared Alderfer, finishing right behind him in second place.
鈥淥ur only race together in four years, and we finished in the number one and two spots,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淚t was a moment I鈥檒l never forget.鈥
Beyond athletics and academics, Gillingham found opportunities to combine his passion for running with his health care training. He worked as a trail running guide for Aspire, a Bellingham-based business, where his EMT certification made him the perfect fit for the role. On 90-mile trail runs at Mt. Rainier National Park, he took on responsibilities such as taping sprained ankles, providing hydration and snacks, and keeping participants motivated and in good spirits.
Through scholarship support, Gillingham not only found financial stability but also a deep sense of connection to his team at Western. 鈥淏eing part of this team and legacy has meant the world to me,鈥 said Gillingham.
Now, Gillingham is continuing his journey as a Division 1 Track & Field athlete at Northern Arizona University while pursuing his long-term goal: earning a Master鈥檚 Degree in Nursing from NAU.
