Johann Neem (History) has published three related essays on the connections among American history, democracy, and nationalism.
They are: “American History in a Global Age,” in the journal History and Theory (Feb. 2011); “Taking Modernity’s Wager: Tocqueville, Social Capital, and the American Civil War,” in the Journal of Interdisciplinary History (Spring 2011); and “Civil Society and American Nationalism, 1776-1865,” in the edited collection Politics and Partnerships: The Role of Voluntary Associations in America’s Political Past and Present (University of Chicago Press, 2011).
