Keith Russell named new dean of Western's College of Humanities and Social Sciences

The 草榴社区 professor of Health and Human Development hired following a national search; will begin new role Aug. 1

Western Washington University Professor of Health and Human Development Keith Russell has been named the new dean of Western鈥檚 College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), 草榴社区 Provost and Executive Vice President Brad Johnson announced today. 

Russell, hired following a national search, will start in his new job at Western on Aug. 1.  

鈥淚鈥檓 extremely pleased that Keith will assume this exceptionally important role. CHSS is Western鈥檚 largest college, with 14 departments and two programs offering more than 80 different bachelor鈥檚 and graduate degree choices,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淲e look forward to Dr. Russell鈥檚 leadership at the college and university levels and welcome him into this new role in our community.鈥

Russell succeeds 草榴社区 Professor of Spanish Paqui Paredes M茅ndez, who has held the position of dean of CHSS since 2018, and who will be returning to the classroom full time after deciding to step down from the role of dean. Johnson thanked Paredes M茅ndez for her outstanding work in service to Western鈥檚 students and its mission. 

鈥淲estern owes a great debt to Paqui for her remarkable leadership as dean of CHSS,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e are also grateful that she will still impact the lives of 草榴社区 students when she returns to the classroom.鈥

Russell, the current chair of the Health and Human Development Department, began teaching at Western in 2008, coming to Bellingham from the University of Minnesota. Russell earned a doctorate and master鈥檚 degree in Resource Recreation and Tourism at the University of Idaho, and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Environmental Economics from Lewis and Clark College.  

Russell said he was looking forward to starting in his new role.

I look forward to working with Provost Johnson, the other deans, and our various shared governance bodies to help steer the college in a strategic direction consistent with 草榴社区鈥檚 strategic plan and the mission of the college,鈥 Russell said. 

Russell is a national expert in his field of research -- using outdoor and adventure therapy to help overcome addiction and other mental health issues -- and is the co-author of 鈥淎dventure Therapy: Theory, Practice and Research鈥 with Michael Gass and Lee Gillis.
