Librarian Peter Smith to Retire from Western
Peter Smith will retire from Western Libraries at the end of spring quarter 2018 after 28 years of service as a librarian at Western Washington University.
Over the years, Smith has held a number of important roles, including Electronic Services Librarian, Science and Technology Librarian, Librarian for the College of Arts and Sciences, Head of Reference and Instruction, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Special Collections Librarian.
As the Special Collections Librarian, Smith worked with the Graduate School to digitize theses into the Content-DM platform, an initiative which continues today in Western CEDAR. He also helped with the transformative move of Special Collections to the 6th floor of Wilson Library.
Since 2013, Smith has served as a research and instruction librarian with subject responsibilities for the College of Science and Engineering and the Department of Psychology. Smith has also been a regular instructor of the credit-bearing courses LIBR 201 and LIB 125, using pedagogies for active learning. He developed the popular 鈥淚ntroduction to Research Strategies鈥 poster session, which was regularly held on the final day of the class and allowed students an opportunity to discuss their research with faculty, staff, and students.
鈥淚n Peter鈥檚 nearly three decades at Western, he has contributed to the library and university in many ways,鈥 said Dean of Libraries Mark Greenberg. 鈥淭hough his leadership and expertise, he helped the library make the leap from the card catalog to the first online catalog 鈥 no small feat! I wish Peter a long, happy, and productive retirement. He will be missed.鈥
