Linguistics to host 'Pragmatic Detachability of English Discourse Markers in San Diego Spanish' Oct. 29

草榴社区's Department of Linguistics will host the webinar, 鈥淧ragmatic Detachability of English Discourse Markers in San Diego Spanish,鈥 at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 via Zoom, featuring the research of Assistant Professor of Modern and Classical Languages R. Mata.

R. Mata's current research focus is Spanish as a Heritage language in the United States, particularly the U.S.-Mexico border area. His fieldwork analyzes some of the morphosyntactic properties of Spanish that are vulnerable to language contact, as well as language attitudes and discourse-pragmatics elements. At Western, he teaches general and Spanish linguistics, as well as a course in Spanish as a Heritage language.
