The Department of Journalism will host a public lecture with journalist Tom Clynes, reporter for National Geographic, contributing editor for Popular Science and author of "The Boy Who Played with Fusion."

Tom Clynes has made a career out of curiosity, exploring and discovering subjects that matter to him, then sharing these stories with the world through words and pictures. As part of his talk, he’ll bring his audience along on assignment to some of the most intriguing and dramatic places he’s visited over the last 20 years of doing international immersion journalism, covering the adventurous side of science and the environment. Attendees will trek into the central African jungle with eco-mercenaries and venture into the hot zone with Ebola doctors. In addition, they’ll be introduced to explorers, conservationists, archaeologists, virus hunters, physicists—people who have populated Clynes’ articles and have succeeded in shaping their lives into extraordinary, world-changing adventures. 

Clynes is a writer and photographer for National Geographic publications and contributing editor for Popular Science magazine. He’s also been published by The Atlantic, Nature, Newsweek, Scientific American, The Sunday Times Magazine (London), Men’s Journal, The Washington Post, some of which have anthologized as part of the Houghton Mifflin’s Best American Writing series. His book publications include Wild Planet! and, most recently, "The Boy Who Played With Fusion," which was short listed for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Honors include Knight Wallace Journalism Fellowship, International Reporting Project Fellowship and the recipient of the Lowell Thomas Award.
