New prose writing course coming this fall for community members
This fall, Western Washington University will offer "Prose Writing at its Best: Fusing Clarity, Grace and Style for All Genres," a three-term certificate course for skill development and insights for writers.
Information sessions for this course, which is open to the public, will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Village Books in Fairhaven.
Participants will learn craft techniques that complement their writing strengths through weekly prompts and opportunities to discuss their material in a supportive classroom environment. Participants will share their favorite books and read “The Great Gatsby” to help define the fundamental elements of a compelling story. By the end of the term, each participant will have expanded and refined a piece of their choosing.
The course is ideal for writers of fiction, narrative nonfiction, memoir and essays. The course consists of weekly face-to-face sessions and take-home assignments to inspire new writing and classroom discussion. Participants have the option to take any one of the individual courses or all three as a nine-month writing program; certificates are awarded for successful completion of all three courses.
