Next Masters of Asian Cinema: 'The Personals' May 8
"The Personals," director Chen Kuo-fu鈥檚 best-known film outside of Taiwan, follows a young woman as she interviews men responding to her personals ad. While the film might seem as though it plays these encounters purely for laughs, there is a deeper reason for her placing the ad and the full realization at the end packs an emotional punch.
Each film in the Masters of Asian Cinema series begins with an introduction from select speakers including local professors, artists, and educators. The Personals will be introduced by Sam Ho, who is a curator, researcher, teacher, writer, and critic. Based in Hong Kong and the United States, Ho specializes in the study of Hong Kong Cinema, but has also written extensively and curated programs on various aspects of film. He served on the jury for the prestigious Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan in 2016.
Co-sponsored by Western Libraries and the Pickford Film Center, the Masters of Asian Cinema Series features some of the best films in World Cinema with movies spanning decades and genres. For more information about this series, please contact Jeff.Purdue@wwu.edu.
