Oct. 10 gathering to explore contemplative practices in higher ed

A gathering titled "Contemplative Higher Education in the Pacific Northwest" will take place before the  at the University of Washington in Seattle on Oct. 10.

The event is slated for 2 to 4 p.m.

Throughout the Pacific Northwest, from British Columbia to Oregon, many academics have been exploring the place of contemplative practices and perspectives in higher education. Yet there has been little opportunity to meet one another, to learn what one another are doing and to form new teaching or research partnerships.

The purpose of the meeting is two-fold: first, to bring local, like-minded academics together to discover what one another are doing; and second, to consider whether it would be good to create some sort of regional learning community and to discuss what this might look like.

The meeting will take place on the Seattle campus of the University of Washington, in the Husky Union Building, room 250, from 2 to 4 p.m. Invited to the gathering are faculty members at institutions of higher education in the Pacific Northwest who are involved in bringing contemplative practices into academic work. Faculty don’t need to be registered for the ACMHE conference to attend, but they should RSVP to dmlevy@uw.edu by Oct. 6 to reserve a place.

Draft agenda:

  • 2:00-2:15pm Welcome and silent meditation (David Levy)
  • 2:15-2:45pm Panel: Models of regional groups (Daniel Barbezat, Amherst College; Tony Back, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center; Mike Gillespie, UW Bothell)
  • 2:45-3:10pm Contemplative practices in the classroom: an example (Karen Litfin, UW Seattle)
  • 3:10-3:35pm Breakout groups: How do you bring contemplative practice into your work?
