BELLINGHAM – Bob Ferris of RE Sources for Sustainable Communities will discuss “Our Relationship with Coal and Cherry Point: It’s Complicated” as part of Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment speaker series at 3 p.m., Friday, May 13 at ’s Communications Facility Room 125.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Although the development of the Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point has been portrayed as the classic conflict between jobs and the environment, the project and its implications are much more complex. In fact, few issues ever engage the entirety of the inter-disciplinary spectrum of environmental studies as completely as this proposed endeavor.
Ferris is currently the executive director of RE Sources for Sustainable Communities. He has contributed work in areas ranging from wolf restoration and agricultural policy to renewable energy and economic revitalization. He is also an accomplished writer, having published numerous scientific and policy documents as well as dozens of opinion pieces in national and regional publications. Ferris has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a master’s degree in Zoology from San Jose State University.
Anyone interested in these issues is encouraged to come and participate. The presentation will examine opportunities for addressing these issues and include a question-and-answer period.
The Huxley College of the Environment speaker series is held to bring together interested members of the and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
