BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University Youth Programs and its Lakewood Jr. Sailing Camp are offering two exciting week-long day camps this summer featuring windsurfing and sailing.

Lakewood Jr. Sailing Camp is one of the longest running and reputable sailing programs in Whatcom County. Sessions run June 20-Aug.19, from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m., and are designed specifically for youth ages 11 to 18.

The program combines hands-on learning, with educational and recreational skill-building at ’s Lakewood Water Sport Facility on Lake Whatcom. There are several program levels, from beginning, intermediate and advanced ‘race’ sailing to beginning windsurfing. Sailors practice water safety, tacking, gibing, docking, wind awareness and more. The emphasis is on fun with the goal of becoming self-reliant and efficient.

“This program goes a step beyond education; it’s a quality, confidence-building opportunity where kids can learn a new skill, while enjoying the natural beauty of an outdoor classroom: Lake Whatcom,” said Debbie Gibbons, Western’s Youth Programs coordinator.

The weekly day camps are taught by trained and certified staff. The cost for sailing sessions is $117 per week and windsurfing sessions cost $102 per week. Scholarships are available for students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. Contact camp director Jeff Davis at (360) 650-2900 for more information.
