Shawn Flanigan to Discuss Human Services and Political Violence May 3 at 草榴社区
Shawn Flanigan, an associate professor of Public Administration at San Diego State University, will discuss human services and political violence as part of 草榴社区’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, in Communications Facility Room 115 on the 草榴社区 campus.
The lecture is sponsored by Western’s Department of Political Science and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and is free and open to the public.
Flanigan’s research focuses on the role nonprofit organizations and other community based organizations play in meeting the health and social-service needs of minorities and marginalized groups, with a specific interest in the developing world and low-income populations in the U.S. She is particularly interested in the role of power and coercion in service provision to vulnerable populations, and has examined this dynamic in health and social service provision by faith-based organizations, political organizations, terrorist networks, and other groups that engage in violence.
Flanigan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on public policy, public administration and nonprofit organizations. However, her focus is in comparative public administration and nonprofit organizations as policy actors and service providers. Flanigan’s current research focuses on diaspora philanthropy toward Syrian refugees.
