Former State Supreme Court Justice Charles Smith on campus tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the PAC

 

Western Washington University’s Leadership Advantage will host former state Supreme Court Justice Charles Smith from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, May 25 at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Main Stage on 草榴社区’s campus.
The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required; and can be obtained through the PAC box office from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Smith will speak on leadership, ethics, and social justice.
Prior the event, Smith will participate in an informal talk-session at 2 p.m. in the Viking Union building room 565. Tickets for the informal talk-session are not required.
The event is sponsored by 草榴社区’s Leadership Advantage, Fairhaven College for Interdisciplinary Studies, Morse Institute for Leadership, and the Associated Students.
Smith graduated from University of Washington with a law degree in 1955 and was only one of two African-Americans in his graduating class.
After graduating, Smith served in the King County Prosecutor’s office and was later named Special Assistant to the United States Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Following Kennedy’s assassination, Smith served as a professor and as a dean at University of Washington’s Law School.
In 1988, Smith was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court, becoming the first African-American to hold such a position.
