Street work near campus begins June 24
Please be aware that the City of Bellingham has two construction projects scheduled this summer that are adjacent to campus.
The 2013 Overlay Resurfacing Project includes pavement repair, leveling of the pavement surface, and resurfacing with hot mix asphalt on Highland Drive from Taylor Avenue through West Campus Way to North Garden, and West College Way from Highland Drive to Bill McDonald Pkwy. Sections of sewer main in Highland Dr. will also be repaired prior to being overlayed.
Today, the City announced that from June 24 to 28 these roads “will be intermittently reduced to one lane as crews prepare various sections for the annual street overlay program and sewer repair. Stremler Gravel is under contract with the City of Bellingham to complete the work. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed through the lane closures. For additional information visit the City webpage at or contact Craig Mueller, P.E., Project Engineer, at camueller@cob.org or 778-7922.”
According to Craig Mueller, the Project Engineer, the schedule has not been broken down by street segment. The work on Highland Drive may create the most impact on university programs; a general breakdown is utility and paving preparation work on Highland from early July to mid-August. As with any construction project, the exact dates and locations are flexible but work will not impact any one specific area for the entire duration. Grinding and paving, which generate the most noise, is scheduled to begin in mid-August.
Bill MacDonald Parkway Sidewalk is the second project. The project will install a new sidewalk, including associated driveway cuts, ADA facilities, and drainage improvements, on the north side of Bill MacDonald Parkway from Ferry Street to Byron Avenue. Go to for more information.
