Student group to mourn 'death of publicly funded higher ed' May 9
The Western Washington University student group will hold an event on Monday, May 9, that they're billing a "."
Attendees will gather at 8 p.m. in the flag plaza near the Wade King Student Recreation Center to write eulogies, listen to speakers and make a statement against proposed budget cuts.
"Higher Education and Western Washington University are facing massive cuts this legislative session," says a statement posted on the group's Facebook event page. "These cuts are continuing a trend of public divestment in higher education. The proposed budget will make sure that access to public universities is limited. Financial Aid programs like the State-Work-Study Program are being cut, while funding for the State-Need-Grant is not keeping pace with demand. And at the same time tuition will be increasing by nearly $1,000 per year over the next two years under the State Senate's proposal."
