The is hosting its annual next week in Canada's capital city, Ottawa.

For 33 years, the institute has provided pre-service and classroom teachers, as well as education faculty members, a strong foundation for teaching about Canada. "Study Canada" has become the premier professional development program in the U.S. for training American teachers about Canada, giving dozens of educators invaluable resources to take back to their own classrooms.

The title of next week's program, "A Capital View of Canada: Nations within a Nation," reflects its re-location to Ottawa and new focus on Canada's diverse regions and peoples. Before moving to Ottawa, "Study Canada" was located in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., and titled “From the Five Themes of Geography to the 2012 Olympics.”

“Study Canada” offers registrants a choice of either three upper-level undergraduate credits or 40 professional development clock hours as they develop a better understanding of Canada, gain global perspectives of civic issues, and receive numerous resources for curriculum development.

In addition to classroom sessions covering core social studies topics, "Study Canada" also offers a series of unique learning experiences that simply are not available through regular tourism, including a a VIP tour of Canada’s Parliament, a morning at the U.S. Embassy, and a daytrip to Montreal with a presentation by the former Premier of Quebec, Bernard Landry.  

This year, 22 registrants from thirteen U.S. states were accepted into the program. They include elementary school teachers, grade 12 social studies teachers, school librarians, French-language teachers, school librarians, district-level social studies specialists and university faculty in departments of education.

As a National Resource Center on Canada in the US, the receives primary grant support for "Study Canada" from the U.S. Department of Education as well as the Embassy of Canada.
