Survey snippet: Students' educational expectations and their parents' realities

This week’s data snippet combines two pieces of data from the Office of Survey Research's survey of incoming freshmen.

The first asks students about their parent’s level of education, and the second asks students about the education they hope to attain.

Twenty percent of respondents said they expect to earn only a bachelor’s degree, while nearly 60 percent expect to earn a master’s degree or higher. Roughly 35 percent of respondents’ parents earned a bachelor’s degree, while only 22 percent earned a master’s degree or higher. Approximately 18 percent of respondents were not sure how far they planned to go in their education.
