Unplug and Connect series starts April 10
Western Washington University’s Prevention and Wellness Services will host a weekly series for students, faculty and staff to discuss happiness and wellbeing.
The sessions will be run by Catharine Vader, Western’s wellness outreach coordinator, and will be from 2 - 4 p.m. on Wednesdays in Bond Hall Room 106.
“We look at the deeper aspects of happiness, toward the realm of wellbeing,” Vader said.
Unplug and Connect provides an environment where participants can come and talk with each other on an equal level without computers, PowerPoint presentations or other electronics.
“We wanted to provide that venue on campus where people can feel welcome, that they can bring their whole self and learn from each other,” Vader said. “Each session is very interactive.”
This quarter focuses on the theme of happiness and how people thrive in adverse situations. The idea comes from a theory called positive psychology, which shifts from looking at what causes mental illness and shifts to how people remain mentally healthy and happy.
Topics for each session:
- April 10 – What Makes Us Happy
- April 17 – Is Happiness A Choice?
- April 24 – Happiness & Thought
- May 1 – Happiness, Curiosity & Humor
- May 15 – Happiness & Reflection
