Washington State Supreme Court Justices to visit 草榴社区 on Feb. 19, 20
Western鈥檚 Center for Law, Diversity and Justice to present a Q&A panel, and the Justices will hear two cases
The Washington State Supreme Court will visit Western on Feb. 19 and 20, and 草榴社区鈥檚 Center for Law, Diversity and Justice will host two opportunities for the university community to engage with the Justices and learn more about the court.
"We are honored to welcome the Washington State Supreme Court to Western鈥檚 campus,鈥 said 草榴社区 President Sabah Randhawa. 鈥淭his visit presents a rare opportunity for our students to witness state government and judicial proceedings in action. We are grateful to the court for offering this remarkable learning experience and reinforcing the vital connection between education and the functioning of our government."
The first opportunity is a question-and-answer session from 9鈥11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in the Wilson Library Reading Room. The Supreme Court Justices will answer questions about the role and functions of the court, and light refreshments will be provided.
The Justices will hear two cases on from 9鈥11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, also in the Wilson Library Reading Room. The court will hear State v. Thompson No. 103338-9 and State v. Abrams No. 103058-4.
In State v. Thompson, the court will deliberate on if a request for medical records in a murder trial was unfairly denied, and if the deceased鈥檚 estate can intervene in an appeal from the accused.
In State v. Abrams, the court will deliberate on if a person who has met the requirements of their sentence can receive a certificate of discharge when they are still incarcerated on a separate conviction.
