Western leadership team sends message to campus regarding student death

The Western Washington University leadership team sent the following message to the campus community regarding Monday's student death:

Dear Members of the Campus Community,

Western Washington University is an institution with core values rooted in the care and genuine concern we share for the well-being of our community and the lives of others. As we reflect back on the events of yesterday, we know that we all join together in extending our deepest sympathies to Tim Crossan’s family and friends and that as a community we grieve together with them.

The individual ways in which we cope with this loss will differ; we can take solace in the fact that no member of this community has to do that alone. No one needs to face their feelings of loss and grief alone. Western has faced adversities in the past and we have prevailed by coming together as a community and relying on each other to carry us through such times. Our reliance on each other is a sign of our strength as a community.

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that, in addition to the support you are drawing now from your own friends and family, we also have many resources available here at Western to assist and support you. Western’s Counseling Center staff is available to meet or speak with any student. Counseling Center staff can be reached during normal business hours (8:30am-4:30pm) by calling 360-650-3164 and after hours by calling University Police Dispatch at 360-650-3555 and requesting to speak with the counselor on call. The Washington State Employee Assistance Program is a resource available for faculty and staff. EAP counselors are available for in-person or phone appointments. The EAP office can be reached by calling 877-313-4455 (toll free). The toll-free after-hours help line is 866-704-6364. TDD/TYY users, please call via WA Relay at 711.

We’d also like to acknowledge and thank the many students, staff, and faculty who have offered their time, support, and professional expertise to our community. In particular, we’d like to recognize the staff in University Residences, the Counseling Center, the Dean of Students Office, and the University Police Department and faculty who have recognized and responded quickly to the needs of our community. As additional news and plans to gather as a community become available we will share that information with you.

We stand proud to be part of a community that cares so deeply and remain united with you as we heal from this tragedy together.

Sincerely,

The Western Washington University Leadership Team

Bruce Shepard, President

Catherine Riordan, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Eileen Coughlin, Senior Vice President and Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services

Stephanie Bowers, Vice President for University Advancement

Steve Swan, Vice President for University Relations

Rich Van Den Hul, Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs
