Western to Host Free Lecture Series in Poulsbo this Winter

POULSBO – Western Washington University will offer a series of free educational lectures this winter covering topics on race and gender equality, methods for positive thinking and human impact on our environment.

Each lecture is open to the public and will be held at Olympic College’s Poulsbo campus.

Vernon Johnson, a professor of Political Science at Western, will begin the winter lecture series at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in room 219 with “All the Ways that Race Still Matters: What the Rulings in Ferguson and Staten Island Tell Us About America.”  Johnson will explore the recent grand jury rulings and various examples of contrasting racial outcomes in our society.

Shannon Bruce, the owner and CEO of StoryBridge, Inc., will use her expertise as an executive coach to share methods to enhance positivity at home and the workplace at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 in room 105 with “Shift to Above-the-Line Culture: How Positive Thoughts Accelerate Results.”²ÝÁñÉçÇø Professor of English Literature and Women’s Studies, Erin Douglas, will discusses the pivotal role of gender studies and how women have influenced our history, culture and more 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 in room 219 with “The Necessity of Gender Studies: Why We Need Women’s History Month.”

Jenise Bauman, ²ÝÁñÉçÇø assistant professor of Environmental Science in Poulsbo, will share how the human impact on the environment has altered food supply, nutrient cycles and water movement. She will discuss management options available to restore damaged natural systems at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 in room 219 with “Native Plants in Restoration: Successes, Failures and Lessons Learned.”
