Western Washington University will offer “Social Media: Building Community” this fall, a three-part evening course designed for licensed professionals, freelancers, those managing social media for their employer, and self-employed individuals looking to utilize social media in reaching their professional goals.

The non-credit course takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. with three workshops available:

  • SM Workshop 1: Facebook, LinkedIn & Twitter – Oct. 13, 20, 27
  • SM Workshop 2: Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube & Blogging – Nov. 3, 10, 17
  • SM Workshop 3: Social Media Analytics & Measurement – Dec. 1 and 8

Participants can choose to take one, two, or all three workshops. The cost is $125 each for workshops 1 and 2, and $99 for workshop 3.  A discounted price of $325 for all three workshops is available if participants purchase all three workshops together.

All workshops will be held in the Communications Facility in an Apple-computer lab on Western’s campus, which has free parking near the building after 4:30 p.m.

Participants will gain a broad understanding of social media and concrete knowledge on how to use available platforms to reach their goals through identifying their brand, building and implementing social media plans, and authentic communication with customers.

Two information sessions are available for interested participants to meet the instructor and learn more about the course.  The first will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Village Books in Fairhaven and the second will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 in Academic West 203 on Western’s campus.

“Social Media: Building Community” is taught by Matthew Anderson, director of social media for Western Washington University.  Anderson draws heavily on his background in community journalism and his experience building a social community for, and conversing daily with, Western’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  In addition to his work for Western’s Office of Communications and Marketing, he occasionally teaches newswriting and editing in Western’s Journalism department.
